Access Statement

Lowthwaite B&B is an old farm house offering four ensuite guest bedrooms. Whilst we aim to meet the needs of all our guests, the age and design of the building does make access difficult for people with limited mobility. The rooms are located on the ground as well as first floor, but, as the house is on the fellside, access to all rooms is via stairs. None of our rooms are suitable for wheelchair access and all bathrooms contain showers positioned within the baths.

Pre-Arrival

We are located in a rural area 9 miles from Penrith and 13 miles from Keswick. The nearest pub is 2.5 miles from here. Both shops and public transport are a little further away.

The closest train station is Penrith, where there are good connections to many parts of the UK.

Arrival & Car Parking

Check-in is between 4.30pm and 9.00pm. Cars can be parked on our private car park which is located across a (very) small road. We will be happy to assist you with any luggage.

Main Entrance

We do not have a traditional ‘main entrance’ but the rear door is accessible without steps, but approached on sandstone flags that can be slippery in wet weather.

Breakfast Room

The breakfast room is accessed from the rear door via six stone steps which are well lit and have a solid handrail. The breakfast room contains a fridge for general use, as well as books, maps, and leaflets.

We do not have a lounge but guests are most welcome to make use of the breakfast room during the day.

Bedrooms

Two bedrooms, Matterdale and Helvellyn, are located on the first floor and are accessed from a nine step external stone staircase close to the rear door. There is a solid railing and it is well lit in the evening.

One bedroom, Blencathra, is accessed via the breakfast room and the above mentioned six stone steps from the rear door. The room itself is on two levels, with bed and toilet downstairs and a sitting area plus bath/shower room upstairs. The stairs have three turns over twelve carpeted steps, and a railing.

One bedroom, the Garden room, can be accessed via the breakfast room (see above) or by a separate entrance. There are four external stone steps to get to this entrance door and there is no railing.

Lowthwaite is centrally heated throughout but temperatures can be adjusted in each room using the thermostatic valves on each radiator.

The ensuite facilities in our rooms consist of a full-length bath, shower (situated in the bath), WC and wash basin. Complimentary toiletries and bathrobes are provided, as well as hairdryers.

Complimentary refreshment trays are provided in all bedrooms.

Our beds are made-up with cotton linen and feather pillows and duvets. Microfibre pillows and duvets can be provided if requested before arrival.

Instructions in the event of a fire are located on the back of each bedroom door. There are fire detectors and sounders in each room and in all communal areas.

Additional Information

Lowthwaite B&B has a fire detection and alarm system throughout. Fire extinguishers are located on all floors. In the event of a fire an alarm will sound. On arrival, please advise us if you have a hearing impairment and might not be able to hear this.

We do not permit smoking inside the building and it is now illegal to do so.

We are happy to cater for special diets or any particular likes or dislikes. Please advise us of these before your arrival. We always have a vegetarian alternative available.

Free wireless internet access is available throughout the property.
