Welcome to Lowthwaite

Lowthwaite is situated in the peaceful valley of Matterdale, only three miles from Ullswater with views of Helvellyn and Blencathra.

Jim and Tine have fully renovated the house to make a family home and a lovely place where our guests can feel welcome and at home. We are the only dwelling at Lowthwaite, and guests have often described the place as a "haven of peace and tranquillity".

We have four beautiful and differently styled bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms. Please look at the Virtual Tours for a closer inspection.

This picture shows you our very special breakfast/dining room. Most of our furniture was handmade in Tanzania, where we had a business arranging Kilimanjaro climbs, and the furniture adds a very distinctive style to all of our rooms.

We have free Wi-Fi throughout the property, but please don't expect too much of it since it's rather slow and sometimes erractic. We love our rural location, and try to remember that, when we get annoyed with the broadband.

We are keen walkers, are happy to help with advice and ideas, and there is also a good library with guidebooks and maps. There are some good walks from the door, the best going along Gowbarrow Fell above Ullswater (see picture) to Aira Force (waterfall) and back again through the unspoilt Matterdale valley. A small walk up Little Mell Fell behind our house is very rewarding, especially in clear weather, with wonderful views over the Lakeland Fells, the Pennines and across the Solway Firth to Scotland.

We are very happy to welcome children of all ages. Little Mell Fell is good for getting younger children up a "proper" fell, and the plentiful becks (streams) can give endless pleasure. Here are our girls in Aira Beck.

The two upstairs rooms are well suited for families, either for three or four people in each room, or used together for a bigger family or a group of friends.

Pets are welcome outside, but we don't accepts pets in the house.

Personal Service

Last, but not least, we do our best to make our guests feel at home and to help with special requests, whether it's a diet, a celebration, or a weekend away with friends. We try to work by the motto "nothing is too much trouble".

In May we have grilled asparagus wrapped in streaky bacon, served with poached egg and shavings of parmesan..
