Is this the way to Lowthwaite B&B ??

The Nordic wave of crime books are here, are you a fan, or would you like to try some?

Most sold at the moment is of course Stieg Larsson and his Millenium triology with Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomquist, but there are many other, and they are very diverse.

Early on there was Peter Hoeg with "Smilla's feeling for snow", which is quite different from more standard crime books.

Want something where you can relax and just enjoy the warmth of the book? And the thought of warm sun and 'traditionally built african ladies'?

Or what about Umberto Eco and The Name of the Rose; great entertainment and something to think about - and a thrilling film!

There are so many different crime novels ... and so little time to read them all!

Book lovers weekend from 5 to 7 November

How many of the above do you know? Sorry it's a bit more difficult because some of them are in Danish, but it all adds to the mystery!

There are many reading groups around, but often crime/thriller books are not discussed, they don't really "fit". So come and spend a weekend where you have a chance to discuss your favourite detective/crime/thriller/spy books, and also get some good ideas of what to read next.

This is a first try, but the idea is that we all select our two favourite books, and then spend time talking about them and having fun, and get some good ideas of what to read next. Tine is a keen reader but has no formal literary education, so she will be the chairwoman, not be a "teacher".

Programme

5/11:

Arrive, meet in the dining room at 20.00 for an informal introduction and some snacks by the fire. If you are to the hardboiled sleuths, you might prefer whisky, or if Miss Marple is your favourite, tea might be the drink. We can manage tea, but please bring your own whisky, wine, or other drinks.

There will be a "Mystery" book present in each room.

6/11:

Breakfast as usual between 07:30 to 08:30.

Meet in dining room at 10:30. We all tell about our first chosen book, giving a short idea of the book (of course without giving away any of the plot!), and why it's our favourite. Others might know them well, and we can hopefully get some more opinions on the books. Depending on how things progress, we might also start on our second book.

Lunch at around 13:00, something simple, but sustaining (promise, there will be no arsenic). Maybe chicken soup, that always seem to revive V.I.Warshawski.

Break time until 15:30, where we meet for or continue with our second book round. If time allows and we are in the mood, we can also try to come up with recommendations for each other apart from the favourite books we already have been through. Or maybe make a top 5 list of all time crime/thriller books?

When we finish in late afternoon or early evening, there will some good bread, biscuits, cheese and other snacks - and probably something sweet, since our family is rather fond of sweet things. Please bring your own favourite drink(s). A full dinner is not planned (since the cook is also the reader), but everyone can stay as long as they want. Maybe a game of Cluedo can tempt?

7/11:

Breakfast as usual between 07:30 to 08:30, then it's time to say goodbye.

You are of course welcome to add days to your stay before or after.

Price

As mentioned elsewhere, this is the first time we are trying this, and because of that we have a low introduction price of £90 per person sharing. This includes two nights B & B in a shared room plus the food and activities above.

For a single room, there is a supplement of £30 for the two nights.

If a couple comes, and one just loves to read and the other wants to walk on the fells, it will be the normal room price, plus £25 for the person participating.

Please book by phone or email, since the online booking can't handle this.

Confirmation

In case we only get a few interested, we will discuss with the ones booked on what they want to do - whether a simplified arrangement, just a normal stay, or simply not come.
